• The Don Skipton Costa Rica Tour

Sometimes I just get a call out of the blue and someone wants a tour for a couple days.  That’s what happened when Don Skipton called from Texas.  He’d called another Tour Company and they were busy.   So they sent him to me.

I met Don at the airport, took him to his bike and I put him up at Villas de la Colina, (with large Pool, Restaurant and Complete Bar) in Barrio Mercedes, Atenas.   The next morning at breakfast, we planned our route.  The whether was perfect for a ride and Don is a good rider.  We were quickly up into the mountains and soon riding at a comfortable pace.

It’s hard to wax poetic when the poetry is all around you.  The moment you formulate  words, poof….the poetry is gone and you’re just looking at an interesting equation …how lines dissect to make a turn more fun.   So most riders can’t …don’t …say to each other, “did you see that field of strawberries with the cow up by the fence?”  It’s more like, “Did you see that  cow in the middle of the road?!”

By varying my speed, I can show a rider an expanded view….perhaps even a glimmer of the strawberries.  But Don seemed content to enjoy the ride; not fast or slow, just a nice pace.  If there was poetry, he kept it to himself … kept also, that male Monalisa smile going all day.

We constantly changed elevations as we went from mountain to mountain,  and eventually came to the Tourist Town of La Fortuna.

…and off to a place where the lizards grow to enormous proportions.   What….up to a meter in length?….. sunning themselves and posturing for the camera.

Lizards are cute but, even with an ice cream cone in your hand, there’s a limit to how long you want to stay there.  And of course, there are two KTMs waiting to transport us to

Volcano Arinal, a drink, dinner and those drop dead views.  But first….ta da…no pictures please….  the incredible Zip Line Tour.

The Hotel Linda Vista offers comfortable rooms, situated for the best view of the volcano and a complete Bar and Steak House.  They also have a heated pool and Jacuzzi with full bar and view of Lake Arenal.

I’ve been watching Volcano Arenal for years and this one morning it was as clear as a bell.  Look….

We rode out and around Lake Arenal in the morning, stopped at a German Bakery in New Arenal and on home.

The next day, Don and I took a local easy dirt ride and found some new roads being built.  I even found some mud to get stuck in when it was dry everywhere else…go figure…  We were back in time to park the bike and take Don to the airport.  Soon he was off, back to Texas, but with new friends here, in Costa Rica.  I expect I’ll see him again soon….
